Home Additions In Rhinelander, WI

The lake, the town, and the neighbors are already perfect, so the house is the only thing left to fix.

Home Additions in Rhinelander, WI, Built for the Way People Live Up Here

The finished addition is a room that changes the arithmetic of the house. A first-floor primary suite so nobody negotiates the stairs at seventy-five.

A four-season room facing the water that stays warm in January. An in-law suite with its own bath and its own door, so three generations share a roof without sharing a bathroom schedule.

Rhinelander’s housing stock is older than most of Wisconsin’s. The city’s own comprehensive plan counts more than sixty percent of homes here as built before 1970, with better than a fifth predating 1940.

Those houses were framed by people who knew what they were doing, in an era when families needed less square footage and heated it with less. Adding to them is a rewarding kind of work, provided somebody checks the existing structure before drawing anything.

Oneida County also skews older than the state, with a median age well past fifty and roughly twenty-seven percent of residents over sixty-five.

That shows up on our schedule as suites, wider doorways, accessible baths, and single-level living.

Remodeling Journey is a design-build remodeler serving the Northwoods from Central Wisconsin. We design the addition, engineer how it meets the existing house, file the permits, and build it with our own crew. One company holds the drawings and the hammers.

Rust and Sawdust did a phenomenal job on our entertainment center as well as the updates to our mantle! We couldn’t be happier!

The couple work together to capture not only the decor feel of the built in but also functionality! Would highly recommend for any project!

Thanks Justin and Adria! I will keep you in mind for future projects. I posted before and after photos on their Facebook page

So, What Does This Actually Run?

An addition is the most expensive square footage in remodeling, because you are paying for excavation, footings, foundation, framing, roof, siding, insulation, and a full run of new mechanicals before a single finish goes on.

What moves that number here: how deep the footings have to go, whether the roof has to be reframed where the new work ties in, and whether the addition brings a kitchen or a full bath with it.

A four-season room on a frost-protected slab and a two-story suite over a full basement sit at opposite ends of the same range.

If an addition is more project than you want, finishing space you already own is often the better route, and our basement remodeling service covers that path.

How We Build an Addition in the Northwoods

The owners of Remodeling Journey

1

Feasibility First

Before design, we look at the existing footings, the framing, and the lot. On a house built in 1938, what the foundation can carry is the question that decides everything downstream.

2

Design and Elevations

Floor plans, exterior elevations, 3D renderings, and a VR walkthrough. You approve how it looks from the street before we submit anything.

3

Permits and Foundation

Rhinelander contracts its inspection and zoning work to an outside agency, and the city advises the permit process can take up to ten business days. We build that into the schedule from the start. Footings go below frost, and never on frozen material.

Weather-Tight, Then Finish

The northern build season is short. We sequence to get an addition roofed, sided, and closed in before hard weather, then finish the interior through the cold months.

What Sets Remodeling Journey Apart

We check the old structure first

Sixty-year-old footings were sized for a sixty-year-old load. We verify capacity during design, while there is still time to act on it.

Licensed and verifiable

Wisconsin Dwelling Contractor #DC072000742 and Dwelling Contractor Qualifier #DCQ072000769.

A warranty with return visits

Five years on workmanship and material defects, and we come back annually to look at the work while it is still covered.

Exterior matching taken seriously

Roof pitch, siding profile, window proportion, and trim depth chosen against your existing house so the addition does not announce itself.

Design and build under one contract

No handoff between an architect and a builder, and no gap for a problem to fall into.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes, and sometimes it needs help. Wisconsin’s code requires footings sized for the actual load, and older footings were sized for the load they had. We evaluate it before design goes far, and underpinning or new interior footings are normal solutions when the answer is no.
The city advises up to ten business days for the permit process, and its planning and zoning office keeps limited weekday hours. We file early and schedule around it.
The city exempts repairs valued under $500, including materials. Anything structural, and any addition, needs a permit. So do decks, sheds, and even fence replacements.
Interior work, yes. Excavation and footings are a different matter, since footings cannot be placed on frozen material and northern ground stays frozen for months. We aim to have foundations in and the shell closed before that window shuts.
Shoreland rules apply within 1,000 feet of a lake and 300 feet of a river, and outside city limits that is county jurisdiction. Grading, filling, and new structures near the water all get checked before design starts.
Added assessed value generally does affect your tax bill. Your local assessor is the right source for what that looks like on your parcel, and it is worth asking before you finalize scope.

Rhinelander sits at the confluence of the Wisconsin and Pelican Rivers in Oneida County, a city of about 8,300 that started as Pelican Rapids and took its current name around 1870 in a successful bid to attract the railroad, which arrived in 1882 and turned a lumber camp into a commercial center. It is the seat of a county that claims more than a thousand lakes, home to Boom Lake, Pioneer Park, ArtStart, the Hodag Country Festival, and the Hodag itself, the folkloric creature that has been the city’s mascot for well over a century. Aspirus is the county’s largest employer, and the downtown still carries the bones of its lumber-era plan. The Explore Rhinelander visitor site is the best introduction to the area, and the City of Rhinelander publishes its residential permit requirements, zoning maps, and inspection contacts online. Older housing, larger lots, and a population that wants to stay put make this good country for a well-built addition.
