A common question we get asked during basement remodeling projects is: Should I drywall my basement ceiling, or not?

Some people have concerns about water leaks from above, or that they may lose easy access to plumbing or electrical during basement finishing. But a drywall ceiling, especially as part of a basement remodel, helps complete the space and makes it more aesthetically pleasing.

While quite rare, it is a viable concern, so let’s discuss it.

Can You leave Your Basement Ceiling as is?

Depending on your tastes and your space, you can ultimately be happy with either option.

If you like the industrial look during basement finishing, you can leave the ceiling exposed and finish it with a solid paint color to cover (as much as possible) the vents/electrical/plumbing “eye sores”.

Refacing cabinets tends to get a bad rap when really the process is simply misunderstood. Many people confuse refacing with refinishing.

Refinishing kitchen cabinets is a different process which involves removing the existing finish, and applying a new one.

Refacing kitchen cabinets is a more complex process than just adding a new stain which involves applying a new layer of wood.

Replacing kitchen cabinets means exactly that, getting rid of the existing cabinetry and buying new ones, be them stock, semi-custom, or fully custom.

Some people may think that that refaced cabinetry looks junky, cheap and mismatched – This is simply not true. When done correctly, the process of refacing can make your cabinets look just as gorgeous as brand new ones.

Let’s dive a little deeper into how to reface kitchen cabinets and see the entire process.

Kitchen Cabinets Refacing Process - Step By Step

#1. Remove all existing doors and drawers

Either with a contractor or by yourself, start by removing the existing doors and drawers. If you want to do this alone, be extra careful to not damage the frame of the cabinet, and even more careful to not mix up the doors and cabinet hardware.

#2. Sand the outer surface of the cabinet Box

Sanding removes grease, grime and dirt. It also creates a good surface texture for the wood veneer to adhere to. Don’t go too deep with the sanding and stop when the old stain/paint is out of the way. Clean the surface thoroughly and let it dry.

#3. Cut 1/8" thick wood veneer

This will be used to cover all outside surfaces that were sanded. Precision is extremely important in this step. The final pieces need to fit like a perfect puzzle to allow for a seamless transition between the edges.

#4. Attach wood veneer to the cabinet box

The pieces are glued, pin nailed and then filled onto the cabinet face. The veneer is wrapped around the edge so nothing looks unfinished. The edge gets finished in the same stain color as the inside of the cabinet. The outer sides of the box and door get finished – including underneath. All of the seams are covered so it appears as a brand new cabinet from the outside.

#5. Attach the doors and drawers

The wood can then be stained or painted to our customer’s liking. Using this method, we have the opportunity to install new doors and drawers in an updated style. Soft close features are an option that can also be added.

Less intrusive to your home - Can be done with flooring and countertops still intact
Less time - Refacing can take a few weeks. New cabinets take a few months from start to finish, especially with a new layout.

The CONS Of Refacing Kitchen Cabinets

The INSIDE of the cabinets are NOT altered. This means the shelving and the whole inside will look the same as when you started the project. This may be a deal breaker for some. You ARE able to refinish the shelving, but the cost starts to increase and gets closer to installing brand new cabinetry.
There is less flexibility for layout, size and design changes - Although refacing allows for some flexibility, huge changes are not an option. For example, if you want an upper cabinet that goes all the way to the ceiling, and you currently have a large gap there, refacing probably won't work well for your upper cabinets.

Refacing is a great option if you don’t need huge changes to their initial cabinetry layout. The refacing process lends itself well to customers on a tighter budget or timeframe.

The ideal candidate would need their original cabinetry “boxes” to be sturdy and in good condition. Refacing can offer you quality, fresh, new-looking cabinetry for less money and time than replacing them.

Shower Insert vs Tiled Shower: Comparison, Cost, Pros & Cons

You’ve decided to update your shower, and now you’re stuck with choosing between a shower insert and a tiled shower.

We’re here to help weigh the pros and cons so you can make the best decision for your home!

What's A Shower Insert

A shower insert, or a prefabricated shower is usually made of fiberglass or acrylic, and comes in one or several pieces.

Keep in mind: If your shower is going to be a one piece unit, make sure it is going to fit through your doors to get into your bathroom. However, most kits will include a shower pan (base of the shower) and one or two wall panels, so you should be good.

The wall panels also include things like shelves and soap dishes that are molded directly into them, and have plenty of color options.

A multi-piece kit allows for easier passage through doorways, and are more popular because of that reason.

Prefabricated Showers

Prefabricated showers are generally easier to install and therefore are a good choice for DIYers, but can also be installed by professionals. Your big box stores will have plenty of these options, but we often recommend with going to a professional who has a supplier.

When you do this, you can get good advice, ensure your shower will better fit your space, and get something that is of better quality.

Having a leak or some mold is the last thing you want to be messing around with when it comes to your biggest investment; your home.

Wall Kit Showers

Wall kits are a great option if you already have a bathtub that is in great condition, or simply want to have a tub. Wall kits surround the walls above your tub to protect your walls from splashing and ultimately paint peeling or worse, mold.

These wall kits can be easily installed to complete a shower enclosure with your existing, or new tub.

Although prefabricated insert showers are a more cost effective alternative to tile, they have some considerable downfalls.

Cost Of A Shower Insert

Either option (prefabricated showers, or wall kits) are a cost effective way to finish your bathroom shower.

The kits range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. We recommend spending as much as your budget allows. If you opt for professional installation, the installation is also going to be much more cheap than a fully tiled shower as it requires much less labor and materials.

For the removal of the old shower, new materials, and installation, expect to pay at least $3,000 on the low end, and upwards of $9,000 for a high-quality service with premium materials and installation.

If you are changing the size or location of the shower and adding some higher end shower fixtures, that price can go even higher.

What's A Tiled Shower

A tiled shower is exactly that – a shower built with tile.

This type of shower can be built to fit just about any space, and has endless possibilities with color and style choices.

The framing for a shower will dictate the number of soap dishes or box inserts call “niches.” This provides a much better space for storing or hiding that bar of soap, shampoo and conditioner bottles, and all other shower items.

Tiled showers are best left to the professionals as they can be more of a leak risk if not installed properly.

The Cost Of A Tiled Shower

A tiled shower has almost endless options and opportunities, and can therefore vary greatly in cost.

From the size of the shower, the location of your fixtures (shower head, valves…), the tile you pick, the pattern you decide to have your tile installed, to the way you decide to close off or surround your shower; the options are almost endless.

That, or maybe you just got your new tiled shower installed and you’re curious what should you do to keep in the same pristine condition.

Well, either way, this article is all maintaining tiled showers, so let’s begin!

The Verdict

Most professionals recommend waiting at least 24 hours before you put your new tiled shower to use. Sooner than that and you risk moving or even damaging the tiles.

After 24 hours, you can do a quick check by touching the grout around the tiles. If it is still tacky or leaves a residue on your finger – wait longer!

Of course, timing can vary based on the material used, along with the temperature and humidity in the bathroom. It can be hard to wait – but worth it to keep your beautiful new shower tile protected!

So you love your new shower….and you want to keep loving it! What does that mean for maintenance on your end?

The Upkeep

Moisture, heat, and lack of ventilation are the perfect recipe for mold and mildew.

Your new tiled shower should be an oasis. However, if your tiles are covered with soap scum and mold, that might distract you from your relaxing at-home spa experience.

Here are some simple maintenance techniques to help keep your shower feeling like new.

Daily

Moisture that is left on your tiled shower walls and floor is more than just water. It can contain body oils, dead skin, shower product residue and minerals from hard water. All of this can add up to nasty soap scum on your beautiful new tiles.

You know… the thing you use to clean the windshield cleaner off of your car windows at a gas station. Using a squeegee after you shower has many benefits:

It’s fast – It takes all of 30 seconds to use your squeegee to strip the remaining water off of the tiled walls, but it will help significantly with nasty soap scum on your new tiles.
It’s easy – Simply choose a top corner to start and pull the squeegee over the tiles in a straight line. This will drag the water to one location and then it will run down to the drain… (Yay! More water down the drain means less moisture trapped on your shower tiles.) Continue dragging the squeegee in this pattern until your shower and shower door is primarily free of water droplets.
It’s cheap – There are a variety of squeegees that you can buy that will do the trick. Heck, you can even find them at your favorite dollar store. If you are looking for one you can mount in your shower, there are many to choose from under 20 dollars.
It works – Although some people may use a towel to dry your shower, oftentimes the fabric fibers get left on the shower walls or the towel ends up smearing left over product making things more messy. The towel is then dirty and needs to be washed also… more time and work. The squeegee effectively removes the water build-up without leaving behind any residue and can be used again immediately for the next shower.
It’s worth it – I mean, think about it… if you are scraping that layer off of your tiles daily, that is less moisture left in your shower that could produce mold or mildew. It will help your tiles and grout stay looking like new and allow you to spend less time on deep cleaning the shower due to less build up. Basically, you get a lot of bang for your buck by removing the extra moisture from your shower after each use.

Other Quick Ways

Other daily tips to help keep your shower clean and fresh longer include:

Keep your bathroom fan on after you shower for 20 minutes
Open a window if you don’t have a fan to help decrease the humidity
Leave the shower door and bathroom door open for a bit after you shower.
Don’t hang wet towels on the shower door - this can trap excess humidity inside the shower.

Step-By-Step Guide To Deep Cleaning A Tiled Shower

Although a squeegee is a miracle worker, you will still need to do a deep clean of your tiled shower weekly (a lofty goal, yes, but when you love your shower – you want to keep loving it!).

Also, the more often you deep clean, the less time it will take because there will be less build-up between cleanings.

The steps below provide a general lay-out for cleaning your shower.

#1. Choose a Cleaner

Choose a Cleaner – A simple Google search will prove to overwhelm you with choices of cleaner. There are many quality solutions you can buy at the store along with an abundance of DIY at-home recipes using household items such as vinegar or baking soda.

It is important to match a shower cleaner to your specific type of tile in your shower (porcelain, glass, natural stone, etc).

Depending on your tile material, certain cleaners could damage your tile if they are too acidic. Do your research before you start spraying!

In general, porcelain and glass are the most forgiving while natural stone is more sensitive to acidic cleaners.

#2. Pre-treat

Turn your shower on high heat and let it run with the door closed for 5-10 minutes. This helps open up the pores in your shower material and loosen stubborn dirt.

#4. Spray
